Understanding Design with VGI using an Information Relevance Framework
نویسندگان
چکیده
Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) has the potential to provide benefit to endusers over and above that of Professional Geographic Information (PGI). A multi-methods approach consisting of participatory observation, focus groups and diary studies, was used to study how VGI and PGI were actually used by a target user group. A theoretical framework of information relevance was used to understand the attributes of information that were most important in relation to the characteristics of the users’ activity and their community. The key finding was that the discussion amongst GIS designers should not be whether to choose VGI or PGI as the information data set, but to consider which combination of VGI and PGI relating to different geographic features and task characteristics will best meet the users’ needs. VGI is likely to be most relevant to the user when a geographic feature is dynamic rather than static in nature, and can also provide a level of detail that is unlikely to arise through PGI. These findings have implications for how different forms of information are most effective for different usage situations. Above all, a case is presented for the implementation of User Centred Design (UCD) principals when integrating VGI and PGI together in a single mashup based product.

Motivating and Sustaining Participation in VGI
Volunteers are the key component in the collection of Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI), so what motivates their participation, what strategies work in recruitment and how sustainability of participation can be achieved are key questions that need to be answered to inform VGI system design and implementation. This chapter reviews studies that have examined these questions and presents th...
متن کاملA Systems Perspective on Volunteered Geographic Information
Volunteered geographic information (VGI) is geographic information collected by way of crowdsourcing. However, the distinction between VGI as an information product and the processes that create VGI is blurred. Clearly, the environment that influences the creation of VGI is different than the information product itself, yet most literature treats them as one and the same. Thus, this research is...
متن کاملValidation of Volunteered Geographic Information Landuse Change Using Satellite Imagery
Land use change monitoring is one of the main concerns of managers and urban planners due to human activities and unbalanced physical development in urban areas. In this paper, a combination of remote sensing data and volunteered geographic information was used to assess the quality of volunteered geographic information on land use and land cover changes monitoring. For this purpose, the ORBVIE...
متن کاملA Volunteered Geographic Information Framework to Enable Bottom-Up Disaster Management Platforms
Recent disasters, such as the 2010 Haiti earthquake, have drawn attention to the potential role of citizens as active information producers. By using location-aware devices such as smartphones to collect geographic information in the form of geo-tagged text, photos, or videos, and sharing this information through online social media, such as Twitter, citizens create Volunteered Geographic Infor...

Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) features a specific type of “user-generated content" that involves spatial data. Geobrowsers are environments that present spatial data dynamically and can be accessed through a compatible browser. A Geobrowser can own a collaborative Web system to collect VGI. This paper presents the ClickOnMap, a framework to develop collaborative environments in Geobr...
